Well, when using smoothing groups, make sure where you want "hard" edges or sharp corners, that the FACES belong to different groups, where the two different groups share the same boundary (edge) this is where IF you have smoothing groups (or smooth by groups option turned on) then it should give you the sharp/hard edges you are after.

Another method is to select the edge (in edge mode) and then to Chamfer that edge this creates a tension which then leaves a hard/sharp egde after meshsmooth.
